Spanish warm up!
Before we beginn with the lesson, I want to prove to you that you already can understand a lot in Spanish just by relating what you see and hear to your knowledge of English, your mother language and other languages that you might know.
I have written a simple text in Spanish for you to learn some expressions, dont worry, you will find a translation of the words you need right next to it.
Focus on understanding the meaning, not translating word by word!

Yo este año voy a terminar mis estudios, viajar a por dos continentes y voy a hacer muchos materiales para aprender español. 😀

Today’s lesson!
A new year has started and as usual, everybody is making their new year’s resolutions!
Today, we will learn how to express our goals for this year by using a simple form of the future tense.
We will also have to check some very basic adverbs to express frequency and quantity (for your “propósitos de año nuevo” you want to be very specific, or they won’t come true!).
Finally, we will learn what are the most common resolutions Hispanic people make to learn some useful vocabulary.

1. Este año + voy a + verbo
Let’s break that down:
Este año significa “this year” and it’s the perfect way to start your “propósitos de año nuevo”.
During this lesson, we will cover 3 formulas to express your resolutions and all of them use this phrase:
“voy a” – It literally means “I am going to” and it is always followed by a verb in the infinitive form (not conjugated)
In this case, we can choose verbs that don’t need an object. Here are some examples:
- Este año voy a ahorrar.
- Este año voy a viajar.
Pronunciation notes:
Remember in Spanish, the consonant “ñ” is really important (sounds like the <gn> in <lasagna>).
If you confuse it with a normal <n> you will end up saying something really funny xD.
Feliz año nuevo = happy new year
Feliz ano nuevo = happy new anus 😮
Also, remember that the <y> in <voy> sounds like the <i> in <Israel>, and that <v> and <b> sound exactly the same in Spanish… so we pronounce /’boi/.

Note: everything written in “<…>” is an orthographic transcription, meaning it is exactly the way we spell and write that word or phrase. Everything written in “/…/” is a phonetic transcription, which means it is the way we pronounce it. In the phonetic transcription we separate the syllables with a dot “.” and we mark the strongest syllable with an apostrophe ” … ‘ … “. So <hablar> is pronounced /a.‘blar/
2. Este año + voy a + verbo + objeto
Let’s break that down:
The second formula we can use follows the same pattern, but in this case, we choose verbs that require a direct object.
Here are some examples:
Este año voy a hacer una dieta vegetariana.
Este año voy a perder 5 (cinco) kilos.
Este año voy a terminar mis estudios.
Pronunciation notes:
Remember the sound of the Spanish <h>?
It’s mute!
So, we pronounce /a’ser/ or if you are in Spain /a’θer/.
PD: /θ/ is the sound of the English <th>, put your tongue between your teeth and let the air out. I’m Latino though, so I won’t make my life that hard haha.
3. Este año + voy a + verbo + frecuencia
Let’s break that down:
The last formula we can use also follows the same pattern but includes an adverb of frequency to express how often are we planning to do what we want to do.
Here are some examples:
Este año voy a ir al gimnasio todos los días.
Este año voy a hacer yoga dos veces a la semana.
Este año voy a visitar mi país una vez al mes.
Grammar notes:
In Spanish, all sentences are made by a subject + verb and a series of complements.
These complements add information like: the direct and indirect objects, the time, location, frequency, and so on…
They always come after the verb!

So now let’s learn some of the most important adverbs of frequency that we will need in the context of the new year’s resolutions.
Todos + time frame:
Todos los días = diariamente
Todos los meses = mensualmente
Todas las semanas = semanalmente
Todos los fines de semana
Todas las mañanas
Todas las tardes
Todas las noches
Examples:
Este año voy a hacer ejercicio todos los días. (to make)
Este año voy a ir al dentista todos los meses. (to go to)
Este año voy a nadar dos veces semanalmente. (to swim)
Este año voy a cocinar todos los fines de semana. (to cook)
Este año voy a levantarme temprano todas las mañanas. (to wake up early)
Este año voy a hacer la siesta todas las tardes. (to have a nap)
Este año voy a estudiar español por una hora todas las noches. (to study Spanish)
Adverbios de frecuencia 2
What if you instead of saying “every day, every month…” you wanted to be more exact?
Number of repetitions + vez / veces + time frame:
Una vez al día
Una vez al mes = una vez por mes
Una vez a la semana = una vez por semana
Dos veces al día
Dos veces al mes
Dos veces por semana
Grammar notes:
In this case, the prepositions <a> and <por> mean the same. Intuitively I would say that <a> is more commonly used when talking.
Examples:
Este año voy a meditar una vez al día (to meditate).
Este año voy a ir a la naturaleza una vez al mes. (to go to the nature)
Este año voy a tomar clases de tango dos veces por semana. (to take classes)
Este año voy a limpiar mi habitación dos veces a la semana. (to clean my room)
